His compositional output is nothing short of magnificent, he is remembered for his tempestuous, larger-than-life personality, and he lived a turbulent life filled with hardship. Beethoven is the epitome of the great classical composer. German pianist and composer Ludwig van Beethoven took the hypothetical baton of music development handed off by Mozart and Haydn (he even received instruction for a time from the latter) and truly transcended the norms of the time. Narrowing down today's list to just five works was the greatest challenge I've been presented with since having to choose between puppies and kittens on a recent Buzzfeed quiz. When I was a music history TA, this would have been a moment when my lecturing would have transformed into a routine of cartwheels and pom poms. In case it wasn't already obvious based on this post, I LOVE BEETHOVEN! I've been champing at the bit waiting to pair wines with Beethoven's music.
